Lost Souls of Saturn
Renowned DJ/producer Seth Troxler is no stranger to experimentation or collaboration. However, upon meeting producer, engineer and sound installation artist Phil Moffa, the duo undertook a project that would change how they both think about life and recording forever. Operating from Moffa’s studio in New York, Lost Souls of Saturn was born with the intention of becoming more than just a dance music duo.
Their first release was a beatless ten-minute remix of Mashrou’ Leila‘s Bint El Khandaq, followed by a debut ambient set at Zurich’s Central Station under the ‘GaiaMotherTree’. Over the past five years, the twosome have worked towards releasing a self-titled album that inextricably links their love of hardware with a fascination for reality versus simulation concepts, inspired by art, film, literature, astrology, mysticism, synchronicity and science.
How did you guys meet?
ST:“I’d been working with The Martinez Brothers but had also been operating for a long time without a proper studio. I was looking for somewhere to do some solo work and they told me I could rent a studio from this great guy in New York who’s really cool to get along with, which was Phil. I rented his studio for a month and after a few weeks of getting all the work finished, asked Phil if he wanted to programme some stuff together and make music. That session turned into four years of our life.”
Rogue Music was the first release from those initial sessions, wasn’t it?
ST:“Our first release was Rogue Music on Hypercolour, which was very different from the music we do on our own. Since then, we’ve been working on what has now become our album on R&S, although we did also do some remixes and the EP Holes in the Holoverse.”
We started the album right after Rogue Music and I recently realised that by the time the and were released first but we actually made those last.”
