Bird expert Joan Collins calls this waterway “very boreal.” David Olbert, of Cloudsplitter Outfitters, in Newcomb, says it “gives a very remote feeling without being actually remote.” Photographer Johnathan Esper describes its natural beauty as “stupefying.” Following the brook’s bends and bulges, peekaboo peaks Kempshall and Goodnow Mountains form the skyline and offer backstops to echoing loon calls.

A Danish timber-management company acquired 92,000 acres and sold recreation rights on thousands of acres to New York State, including the Township 20 tract between Newcomb and Long Lake.
