How to navigate common self-build legal issues
Every self-build project will involve legal issues at some point. Last month we looked in detail at the legal issues associated with finding and buying a plot. However, the legal minefield extends from purchasing the plot right through to agreements to ensure services are connected and most issues will need to be dealt with before a project can commence.
When managing the build, unlike when buying land, there isn’t a key individual such as a conveyancing solicitor that will help unravel and resolve any legal matters. To keep a build on track, the self-builder must therefore be somewhat informed and prepared to roll up their sleeves to deal with any legal issues that arise.
Construction is a bureaucratic process with myriad sources of legal complications, ranging from dealing with the planning consent to controlling health and safety and protecting the interests of neighbours while the build is underway.
