20 ways to build a better home

Over the last 10 years I have helped over 300 families to take steps towards building their dream home. It’s an exciting journey every time, and I always impress upon my clients that they should strive to make their new homes as great as they can (and as their budgets allow). So now I want to share with you some of the advice I pass onto the self-builders I work with — advice that will help you to build a quality home!

1 BE SMART WITH STORAGE

A common criticism of modern developer-built houses is the lack of storage, but if you’re building your own home you can design in as much as you think you’ll need… and then a bit more! Modern families come with lots of ‘stuff’, but we expect to see modern homes without any clutter — this stuff must go somewhere!

On the ground floor allow space for larger items like prams and vacuums, and on the first floor make sure you have built-in wardrobes in all rooms, as this will make your home more saleable. If you are creating a one and half storey home, you can create clever storage in the small angled spaces below the eaves space. If you are going for a contemporary look, you should look to include floor to ceiling cupboards that blend in with the walls in your design.

2 INCLUDE NATURAL LIGHT
