Your guide to stone flooring

Select natural stone for flooring and you can be pretty sure of a lasting love. After all, stone is enduringly stylish and should age beautifully. Narrow your focus to limestone and travertine and, as well as being confident that your choice won’t fall foul of the whims of interior design fashion, you’ll find a range of gorgeous colours and appealing natural detail.

But while it’s a fifth wall in terms of decoration, the floor has to work a whole lot harder. Standing up to the comings and goings of a family (which may include four-legged, claw-owning inhabitants), putting up with dirt and, in some rooms, frequent splashes, gives it a heavy workload, so thinking of the practical demands you’ll make of the floor together with its looks is vital when you’re buying.
