LEFTWING: KODY
Blasting out a steady stream of club bangers from their Maidstone studio, Leftwing : Kody – aka Jon Kong (Leftwing) and Chris Adie (Kody) – have been a musical partnership to be reckoned with since 2012. With residencies at Fabric and Sankeys, and releases on a range of labels including Toolroom, Truesoul, Knee Deep In Sound and their own acclaimed Lost Records, there’s no stopping these eclectic house DJ/producers.
We caught up with them at their aforementioned Kentish facility to witness them remix their recent track – I Feel It – released on the iconic Toolroom Records – in Logic Pro X. Before we kick off the session, however, we sat the pair down to find out how they both got into making music.
“When I was younger, I was into the garage scene,” begins Jon. “When I was 12, I begged my mum to get me a set of decks, and I learned how to DJ. Early influences were garage, then later down the line, I got into house music, and started to produce and play out. Me and Chris met because we were playing at a lot of the same parties together. We were playing each other’s records, and it was just a natural progression to try and jump in the studio together.”
Some seven years later, the boys have seen the dance music scene go through a lot of changes, and their style has evolved along with it.
Jon: “The sound has changed a lot. We were producing house music quite a long time before we broke through – we were making more progressive-style house that was a little bit more musical, but it wasn’t really working for us. Then that ‘deep house’ thing came about, and we felt we could fit in because we’d already started making garage-y deep house.
“The sound has evolved a lot over the years: EDM’s turned into tech house, and everything’s amalgamated under the ‘tech house’ sort of sound. We’ve been through a lot of it, really. When we first started raving, minimal was the sound – minimal
