DRUM & BASS

DnB is a fast-paced style of music that has its roots in the 1990s London jungle scene. Early jungle records combined booming, reggae-inspired bass with heavily edited, pitched up funk breakbeats and samples taken from music styles such as hip-hop, ragga, jazz and techno. As jungle passed its peak in popularity a new take on the sound emerged, which was known as drum & bass.

While the two styles of music are closely related in terms of BPM, structure and production style, DnB in comparison is typically more refined, both in terms of drum programming and overall production values. Great importance is placed on sound design, clever sampling tricks and making the low frequencies weighty, without compromising on loudness or brightness.

Part of the undoubted appeal of DnB is the wide variety of styles and influences that make up the genre, ranging from the uplifting liquid sounds of producers such as Calibre and Brookes Brothers through to hard as nails, jump-up smashers from the likes of Hazard or DJ Guv. With such a (under cm280), to create a 174bpm roller that’ll get both your subs rattling, and head nodding.
