Q We are considering using a chain-driven beam axle at the rear of an FSAE [Formula Student] car. Do you have any suggestions as to how to approach this? And how do you determine the anti-squat and the anti-lift with chain drive?

A The first question calls for a fairly lengthy response, so I’ll address the second one first. Assuming that the driven sprocket is on the axle, the run of chain that’s under tension acts like a link under tension. If the engine is ahead of the axle, that will be the upper run of chain when we are under power. Interestingly, but probably less importantly, on deceleration engine braking
