Nothing compares to the sight of a mass of poppies bursting into bloom in early summer; their crepe paperlike petals glowing in the sunlight are stunning. From the classic single red-orange ‘Legion of Honor’ corn poppy at left to lush doubles, such as ‘Flemish Antique’ breadseed poppy on the next page, there’s an amazing range of colors and shapes to choose from. Though the flowers can be fleeting when temperatures are warm, these tough plants are rarely bothered by insects or disease, and deer leave them alone, too.
