I have a lovely Gibson Custom Shop R9 – the 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. I absolutely love the thing, but I’m very close to making a drastic hardware swap. I’ve never liked the Kluson-style ‘tulip button’ tuners, as they feel a bit flimsy to me. As you will probably know, a popular mod is to replace the stock tuners with weightier Grover models. Is this modification worth the effort? If so, what Grovers are the correct models for my Les Paul? There are loads of different types from what I can see. Also, what’s actually involved in fitting them? Is this a job I can tackle myself?
