In his parallel existence as a household-name type of celebrity who is also highly respected in the guitar community for all the right reasons, Mayer’s only living comparison is Clapton. Indeed, he told us himself the dichotomy isn’t lost on him.

“When I think about how far I’ve come as a guitar player,” Mayer muses about and know what the hell that is? Nobody knows that stuff, only us and others of our ilk… Yeah, you can take my picture when I come out of a club, but you can’t take the guitar playing out of me.”
