GRAPHIC DETAIL The art of the movie poster by Adrian Curry

HE MADRID-BASED, ARGENTINE-BORN graphic designer and photographer Juan Gatti is best known among cinephiles for his long, fruitful collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar. Since (1988), Gatti has branded the Spanish auteur’s work with colorful, brash, collage-based designs for promotional (1986) and two posters-within-the-film props for Law of Desire (1987). But from then on, Gatti became an essential part of Team Almodóvar, advising on the look of his films from the script stage and attending dress rehearsals. Distinguished by sassy typography, vivid color, and canny photomontage, Gatti’s graphics provide a portal to the Almodóvarian universe of luxe and lust. He has created posters for other filmmakers too; his best known outside Spain include his (1995), and the 1996 New York Film Festival. A lavish two-volume monograph published in 2011 celebrated his designs, including Vogue layouts, perfume bottles, and elaborate fashion show invitations. Meanwhile, his work on Almodóvar’s that same year set him on a bountiful fine art detour into a different world of collage: ornate 19th-century anatomical and botanical illustrations.
