SHELF LIFE

I LIVE MY LIFE SURROUNDED BY BOOKS—NOT THAT I HAVE read all of them, or fully understand them. Considering the kind of immersive work to which I devote myself, I occasionally suffer from a certain attention deficit. I read, but my head is somewhere else. My books are filled with notes that only my secretary and I are capable of deciphering. All of my films exist in the free spaces of the books that I read. Sometimes reading gives me the key to unlock a shot, but generally, besides giving me pleasure, reading puts me in a very fertile state of mind, transporting me to a place where ideas can flourish.

I begin to read while I’m writing a script, and I must continually interrupt myself to jot down
