Beata Heuman reveals how her animated style brings energy to her own Victorian sitting room

1 . THE BEAUTY OF DESIGNING for yourself, rather than a client, is that your approach can be more organic. When we moved to this Victorian house three years ago, the only piece we had for this sitting room was the upholstered ottoman. I had the sofa made so that we had somewhere to sit, then added to the room slowly.

2 . I love weird creatures, such as the one on this royal banner from the former African Kingdom of Dahomey. I found the two vases in a junk shop then had them made into lamps, wiring them to display different sides so they don’t perfectly match.

LIKE THE OTTOMAN, the chaise – my Wave Longue design – stands on slim legs so that light passes beneath, which is key to creating a sense of space in a small room. The rattan chair also sits lightly here. I chose it for its sculptural lines
