RIVER OF WORK

Dennetts is one of those yards that keeps a relatively low profile for the amount of work it carries out, perhaps because it, like many of the upper Thames boatyards, already has more work than it can handle. What goes on here though, in a modest collection of riverside sheds by Chertsey, really is on an epic scale.

She's one of four similar jobs on, all needing to ready for the quinquennial Dunkirk return next year (“They be ready,” says Stephen, “or the owners would have to wait another five years.”) There are two Silvers motor yachts, mid-century, mid-sized and twin-engined, both getting pretty much the works as well. There is a Chris Craft here, the first Andrews-built boat there, a small shed full of upper Thames boats in hibernation… then we see something really unique.
