a singer and actress who began her career as a vocalist with World War II-era big bands before becoming a pop star and cinematic icon, died May 13 at her home in Carmel Valley, Calif. She was 97. Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio,; megastardom would follow in the ’50s with (1955) and Alfred Hitchcock’s (1956), which featured her biggest hit and lifelong signature tune, the Academy Award-winning “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).” A top box-office draw for more than a decade, Day had largely retired from show business by the 1980s. But she returned to the limelight in 2011, at age 89, with the studio album which reached the Top 10 in the U.K.—making her the oldest artist to achieve such a feat.
