NAKAMURA WINS U.S. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP, YU TAKES WOMEN’S TITLE

The United States Chess Championship and Women’s Chess Championship took place in March at the Saint Louis Chess Club. Both tournaments were invitational 12-player round-robin events featuring the highest-rated players in the country.
Hikaru Nakamura won the event for the fifth time, taking home the first prize of $50,000 with a score of 8-3 (five wins and six draws). He had first won this event in late 2004 (officially called the 2005 U.S. Championship) at the age of 17, and had most recently won in 2015. By coincidence, the winner of this year’s Women’s Championship was 17-year-old Jennifer Yu, who ended up with an extraordinarily high score of 10 points
