Between splash screens and a ‘discretion advised’ warning, Hidden Layer Games suggests its storyled puzzle-platformer is best played with a controller and headphones. We’d add a further recommendation: you might want a drop of the is frequently beautiful, with some of the boldest pixel art we’ve seen in a long time. Its character sprites could have come from a forgotten Game Boy platformer, while its environments are more coolly contemporary, with flashes of light and faint glimpses of a mostly shrouded sun lending colour to a near-monochromatic palette. Any warmth, however, is extinguished in a story that begins in a dark place, and only gets bleaker.
