CAN I APPLY MANURE AND GARDEN COMPOST TO SOIL IN SPRING?

Manure is traditionally applied in autumn and winter when digging over the plot or initially, in the case of no dig, a 10-15cm (4-6in) layer of organic matter such as manure, green waste or compost is placed on the surface and left for the worms to incorporate. Then no-dig plots are annually topped up with 5-8cm (2-4in) of organic matter, such as garden compost or manure applied in autumn again.

Applying relatively fresh manure too late in spring is not ideal as it could affect the germination of seeds plus it is not so easy to get a nice fine tilth to sow into. If you have some really well rotted, almost soil-like
