Appropriate AIS use
Your article on AIS and radar, ‘AIS vs radar: Do you really need both?’ (YM, April 2019) and Tim Colquhoun’s letter, ‘AIS checks with NCI’ (YM, April 2019), has prompted me to write to you about AIS use.
My chartplotter/AIS only tracks the nearest 99 vessels (other products may be different). In fog when passing through the Solent recently, I could hear ship fog horns but couldn’t see them on my AIS until they got quite close. The reason for this was because of the number of nearby moored or anchored vessels showing up on the screen. It seems that many boat owners just leave their AIS system on
