A host of top-10 finishes left the British Youth Sailing team hungry for more as the 2019 Youth Worlds ended in Gdynia, Poland, with many falling just short of a medal.
Although the team came away empty-handed, RYA coach and Team Leader Jonny McGovern was impressed by how this next generation of British sailors responded to the pressure of competing at the most prestigious event in youth sailing, facing new challenges daily as a roller coaster of results tested their ability to dig deep and stay focused.
“They all showed a really professional approach and worked well together to keep fighting all week,” he said. “We had a real mix of conditions throughout the competition and it was great to see so many in contention for medals going into the last day. The experience the sailors gained will give them a great springboard to build on in the future.”

EVERY POINT COUNTS
Haydn Sewell and Will Heathcote finished within just a single point of bronze and posted the best GBR 420 boys result at the Youth Worlds in 10 years. Disappointed but determined, Sewell says: “This has made us even more hungry to come back and medal.”
Their experience from the event will stand them in good stead. Among the positives was the training goal they had set themselves for the regatta, which was to improve their starting.
