When Oscar Tabarez took over for his second spell in charge some 13 years ago, Uruguay had missed out on five of the previous eight World Cups and made little impression in the three for which they had qualified.

What a difference a coach and his project can make. The statistics say that Uruguay were South America’s best team in 2010 and 2018 – World Cup semi-and quarter-finalists respectively – and in between they beat England and Italy on the way to second-round elimination in 2014, as well as winning the 2011 Copa.
