“It feels a bit strange, but here we are,” said Ernesto Valverde, the only one of the four coaches travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup to publicly say that there was something not quite right about it.
He might not have launched a furious attack on the format or the choice of location, and nor did he engage in a deep discussion of human rights, but on the eve of his side’s first game – which turned out to be his last – Barcelona’s boss raised doubts. “It’s not the same as playing at home,” he commented.
