THE ENTRANCE TO THE WALLED GARDEN at Cowdray is about as theatrical as anyone could hope for. Unassuming from the exterior, a narrow, cobbled entrance tunnel opens out to reveal a quintessentially romantic English garden in all its summer glory. Scented roses, trailing clematis, neat parterres and graceful, rusted, iron arbours all contribute to the classical scene although things were very different when Jan Howard and husband Mike first viewed the neglected and forgotten space that was to become their passion.
