Eddie Jones maintained his victorious run against Australia as England coach, making it seven out of seven as his side recorded their biggest-ever knockout win to reach the last four for the first time since 2007 – and inflicted the heaviest RWC defeat on Australia. Jonny May marked his 50th cap by becoming the first England player to score a brace in a World Cup knockout match since Rory Underwood and Will Carling did so in the 1995 semi-final against New Zealand.
TURNING POINT
Kyle Sinckler had a stormer, scoring England’s third try and getting on top at the scrum, but the pivotal moment came midway through the second half. As the Wallabies sent runner after runner towards the line, Sinckler stripped the ball from Isi Naisarani – one of 18 turnovers Australia conceded during the 80 minutes – and England were able to clear the pressure. From that point on, they closed out the game.
