    If you’ve ever dreamt of whipping across the waves on one of Sir Ben Ainslie’s foiling catamarans but don’t have the spare millions then the eFoil can give you a slice of the action for a fraction of the cost

    Developed over a period of eight years by an American entrepreneur the eFoil is a carbon-fibre board, 5ft 6in in length and 2ft wide, with a powered hydrofoil attached to its base. The board weighs around 14kg and breaks down into three parts for transportation.

    An electric motor, powered by a lithiumion battery spins the protected propeller for a top speed of around 25mph. Lift claims the board has an hour of running time at 15mph before needing to be charged. It’s controlled by
