Is Golf Too Expensive?

Arecent poll posted on social media by former World No.1 Luke Donald asked what the biggest hurdle the game faces is. He gave four options: the distance the ball is going, pace of play, the rules and the cost of golf. You could certainly add a fifth – how difficult golf is to master, but that’s not a major issue for Luke! The poll garnered over 26,000 responses and hundreds of comments, with golfers chipping in proving what a hot topic it is.

It will come as little surprise to hear that pace of play, with 46% of the vote, was cited as golf’s biggest issue. The distance the ball goes had 8% and the rules of golf 9% of the vote. The cost of golf was a clear second, with 37% of people choosing that option.

As anyone who has played golf knows, the game is intrinsically not a cheap one to play as there are many facets to it. Whether it’s having membership of a club or paying visitor green fees, investing in new equipment and coaching to help you improve or attending tournaments to see the elite up close and personal, having golf as your passion comes at a price.

But just as with anything in life, there are expensive and cheap options in golf, too.
