Mizuno MP-20 Irons from £150per club
GM Verdict
With the MP-20 irons, Mizuno has focused on improving the feel by adopting a former technique of adding a layer of copper to the head. There are still three models – the muscleback (MB) continues and is joined by the MMC and HMB irons.
Testing the MB against the MP-18 version, we found our ball speed increased by over 3mph and the club speed was also 1mph higher with the new model, perhaps partly down to the 1/4” longer stock shafts. Either way, it led to an increased 7-iron carry distance of five yards on average, from 163 to 168 yards. It launched and flighted the ball higher, which will certainly contribute to the extra distance. It also felt a little bit softer thanks to what appeared to be a quieter sound. Bad swings are punished, especially in the longer irons, but this is to be expected. Visually this club is fantastic. It has a thinner topline and longer blade length with what appears to be a narrower hitting area. A slimmer sole with more camber allows the head to move quickly
