Should roadside parking be banned on Route 73?

Have you ever wondered why the parking lots for Forest Preserve trailheads in the High Peaks Wilderness Area are all different sizes?

When the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation created the first High Peaks Wilderness Area Unit Management Plan in 1999, it chose to have parking lots sized to fit the landscapes they served.

Using what little baseline data was available to them, DEC personnel tried to match the carrying capacity of the landscapes (the ability to withstand visitors) with the number of people who could arrive in the cars that fit
