Everyone from poets to meteorologists declares April the cruelest month, and antsy hikers are no exception. They (along with others) have even given it its own moniker: Mud Season, which can begin in March in the lower elevations and extend past Memorial Day in the high country. It’s too warm for solid snow underfoot, too cold for the ground to have dried out. What’s a hiker to do?
