Railroad still seeks peaks
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad still wants to restore service all the way to the High Peaks region. Its top officers maintain they could help solve traffic and parking problems in the increasingly crowded area.
“On some of the summer popular days, the crush of cars—if you go up there you know this—it can be brutal,” said Bill Branson, president of the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, which operates the railroad from April through November. “It doesn’t need to be that way. I mean the train won’t answer all the questions, but the train could answer some of them.”
The railroaders would like to see an Adirondack railroading renaissance from the restored Utica station all the way to Saranac Lake or even Lake Placid, noting they have room for canoes, trail bikes and camping gear in their baggage cars and could drop outdoor enthusiasts at trailheads along the way.
