Jonanthan Anzalone's “Battles of the North Country” is interesting and useful, but it's not the book that the subtitle, "Wilderness Politics and Recreational Development," suggests. I was anticipating analysis of the great 20th century debates concerning the forest preserve and its protection: fire truck trails in the 1930s, salvage operations after the great blowdown of 1950, snowmobiles in the '50s and later, dams proposed on wild rivers, or the litigation over float-plane access to lakes and ponds in designated wilderness areas.
