THE 3D PRINTING REVOLUTION
In many ways, film has been the medium through which we have been first introduced to the technologies of the future. Take for example self-driving cars in the renowned film, Total Recall, which are now a reality and being rolled out by a range of companies, such as Tesla, Coast Autonomous and Google. Or the power lace shoes in Back To The Future Part II, which Nike decided to create in 2016 and plan on continuing to develop in their forthcoming shoe, the Nike Adapt BB. These are only a couple of the ideas that screenwriters have had which have later become a reality.
3D printing is a technology that has featured in a range of films for over two decades. Although the technology was invented in 1984 by Charles Hull, the machinery was basic, and it was only in films and TV where we were able to see the technology’s potential.
Although many where a team end up 3D printing a whole human – it could be argued that the creativity of writers, when including 3D printing into their scripts, was a precursor to the innovation we see today.
