HOW DNEG DOES… FX

Blockbuster films and television shows regularly require buildings to be blown up, or characters to exhibit superhuman powers. Generating such scenes often goes beyond animation, and into the world of effects simulation, often of real-world phenomena.

Many of DNEG’s recent projects include these kinds of effects simulations, from the cities through which robots and monsters wreak havoc in Pacific Rim: Uprising, to the magical moments in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Effects sims were also delivered for Deadpool 2 and Venom; 3D World asked DNEG artists specifically about these two shows.

DESTRUCTION IN DEADPOOL 2

The convoy crash in David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 is a defining effects moment in the film. It occurs when Juggernaut causes a prison-transfer convoy to plunge through an overhead roadway, destroying the vehicle itself and much of the road. DNEG was tasked with simulating the major elements of the crash and inserting it into live-action plates.
