milk: BUILDING ENVIRONMENTS

So far in 3D World’s special look at the work of visual effects studio Milk VFX, we’ve peeked behind the curtain at how assets are created, and how characters and creatures are animated. There are of course many other stages in VFX production that take place at the studio, and articles in future issues will dive into FX simulations and compositing.

Amongst all that work is environments, an area that often combines many different disciplines, including asset creation and compositing to get to a final image. But environments, especially at Milk VFX, tend to also be a highly artistic side of the effects process, since they are often realised like paintings, and must closely follow any concept art.

Here we explore Milk VFX’s environments work for the television series Good Omens and Origin, and we also feature a set of pro tips from the studio itself for building up environments.
