In 1080, William the Conqueror sent his eldest son, Robert, to Scotland to defend his kingdom. On his successful return, Robert set about creating a timber fort on the River Tyne to prevent against further sorties south of the border. While the structure lasted for less than a century before it was replaced, it was this novum castellum or “new castle” that would give the modern city its name.
