ENGLAND’S LAST CASTLE

It may look medieval, but Devon’s Castle Drogo was actually constructed between 1911 and 1930, making it the last castle to have been built in England. Sitting atop an outcrop on the edge of the dramatic Dartmoor National Park, this grade I listed building which overlooks the Teign Gorge was originally built for the wealthy businessman Julius Drewe. Drewe was the founder of the Home and Colonial Stores, one of the UK’s biggest retail chains, which first arrived in 1883. Many years later the company would be relaunched as Allied Suppliers and further down the line merged with Safeway.
