Gong

Eternal prog-psych oddballs open up a new chapter.

Gong in 2019 are the ultimate anti-legacy band. Bequeathed by late mastermind Daevid, their second since Allen’s death in 2015 and the first to feature no trace of his presence. Tonight’s set leans heavily on that record in the shape of its twin centrepieces, (14-plus minutes) and the fractalising, karmic-wheel epic (20 minutes plus change). Both are undiluted nods to a different era, one that even the Allen-led Gong left behind a long time ago. But at the same time, they have their eyes resolutely fixed forward: 21st-century wig-outs poised on the launching pad, ready to blast off on an infinite journey into space.
