    Dwight D. Eisenhower’s early years in the U.S. Army were disappointing for him. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in June 1915, he hoped for a post in the Philippines. Instead, he was sent to hot, dusty Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas.

    World War I had broken out in Europe in 1914, but the United States did not join the fighting right away. When the United States declared war in 1917, Eisenhower hoped for an overseas combat assignment.
