Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower began his first assignment as an officer in the U.S. Army in the fall of 1915. He was sent to Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas. One day, while he was making his rounds of the camp, he met a young woman. Her name was Marie Geneva “Mamie” Doud. The Douds were a prominent and wealthy family from Denver, Colorado. To avoid the cold winters at home, the Douds had bought a house in San Antonio. They were visiting friends at the camp that day.
