Heat Stroke

Let’s first clarify the definition of heat stroke. It’s likely not all you thought it was…

A diagnosis of heat stroke requires the fulfilment of two criteria:

1. Heat: A core (rectal) body temperature of more than 40.5°C.

2. Stroke: A disturbance in mental state (confusion, disorientation, drowsiness, or abnormal behaviour).

When a thermometer is unavailable, other signs that suggest a very high body temperature include hot skin, wet skin, dehydration, a fast heart rate at rest (more than 100 beats per minute), vomiting, diarrhoea, or fast breathing.
