THE ENCHANTED FOREST

Like his fictional countryman Don Quixote of La Mancha, José Pedro Enrique Paronella grew up enraptured by the romance of medieval castles and knightly chivalry. He loved his grandmother’s tales of the Spanish nobleza and their dramatic deeds of derring-do.

Unlike the deluded Quixote, however, José was more than just a dreamer. Leaving his Catalonian village in his teens, he worked for a time as a baker and pastry chef. Then, in 1913, aged 26, he emigrated to Australia to make his fortune.
