If you had to choose just one learner-legal, early 1970s bike on which to hurtle around the Black Mountains of south Wales, it would have to be a Yamaha RD250.
Earnest apologies etcetera if your weapon of choice would be different, but we all know, deep down that, really, the RD is the right tool for the job. Yes, a Honda K4 or G5 would offer better fuel economy, unquestionably a Suzuki GT250 would have a good crack at the task and when it comes to plotting up in the car park for a brew afterwards, and a Kawasaki S1/KH 250 is the one going to get the admiring comments. However, the Yam is emphatically the machine for this particular task.
The ‘Race Derived’ frame keeps the bike nicely on track and that twin piston caliper up front will haul the RD down from speed if the pair of us get too close to the edge of the road and its precipitous, sheep-covered, run off area. As I’ve no desire to rub
