Disappointment, resignation, relief. That was the gamut of reactions the Muslim community greeted the Supreme Court's November 9 Ayodhya verdict with. Of course, the community is not a monolithic political entity and reactions varied in degree and emphasis-tempered by class, region and even sectarian loyalties. Clerics and community leaders were unhappy with the legal outcome of the case, but seem to have made their peace with it. To the ordinary Muslim, the verdict offered closure. The community's biggest bone of contention with the Hindus had been 'settled', even if not in their favour, and they could get on with the business of everyday life. Muslim politicians likewise, with the exception of a few, accepted the verdict
