Righting the Wrong | 1992 Babri demolition case
Disputes over the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi site are older than any of us was around to see. For centuries, both Hindus and Muslims claimed ownership over the site. Civil proceedings with regard to ownership came to an end on November 9, with the Supreme Court holding that the Hindu side had "possessory title" over the disputed site.
In the immediate aftermath of the judgment, those associated with the demolition of the Babri Masjid (1992) have announced their sense of vindication and relief. It is, however, important to note that the Court's judgment does not condone the demolition. On the contrary, it repeatedly holds that the demolition was illegal and an "egregious violation of the rule of law".
