From the late-1950s until the Class 87s of 1972-75, all production BR electric locomotives followed a similar pattern of construction. It wasn’t until 1983 that a very different 25kV AC electric prototype was ordered from BREL/Brush Traction as the forerunner of a proposed new class of powerful 125mph Co-Co machines.
