It is impossible to guess the origin of the name of magnificent stone village of Corfe Castle in Dorset, for it is exactly what it says – a settlement that grew up around an 11th-century fortification, which towers above the surrounding countryside, and once guarded the gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Swanage and Wareham.
One of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone as opposed to earth and timber, it underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.
