On May 21, 1838 the London & Southampton Railway opened its metropolitan terminus of Nine Elms, along with the first 23 miles of its line running to the South West.
The entire route to Southampton was completed on May 11, 1840, and at first there were five trains each way each day.
It was an instant success. Local traffic became a speciality for the line, serving Wandsworth, Wimbledon, Kingston, Ditton Marsh (now Esher), Walton, and Weybridge. A branch from what is now Clapham Junction opened to Richmond on July 27,
