Isambard Kingdom Brunel set out to make his Great Western Railway the envy of the world, and in so many ways it was. Fabulous structures such as Maidenhead Bridge, Box Tunnel and Sonning Cutting took the technology of the day to its limits, not to mention his 7ft broad gauge system, which boasted of being able to carry bigger loads at higher speeds than other lines.
However, there was one big minus point.
