My first visit to the Kaokoveld was in 1982 and the most recent ‘solo trip’ was in 2017, so herewith my advice to Hans 1 (October 2019 issue/SA4x4 Forum – Advice on travel alone from Puros to Kunene)...

Firstly, if you think that safety is in numbers, think again! Group travel can be just as dangerous, as people tend to do strange things when in a group that they would never do when travelling solo. Overconfidence (and lack of concentration) is the reason for most vehicle damages that occur as they feel compelled to prove their driving skills and vehicle capabilities. So, in my opinion, if you have some off-road skills, a reliable and well looked-after 4x4, some spirit of adventure and a portion of self-confidence, you can do it. Go ahead, you won’t regret it.
